Create Expressive Textures with Scratchers Painting Tools

Scratchers Painting Tools give artists greater control over texture, movement, and surface effects. Designed with sturdy plastic blades that retain their shape under pressure, these versatile tools make it easy to spread thick paint, carve precise lines, and create consistent patterns. Unlike flexible palette knives or silicone tools, Scratchers provide the firmness needed to push and manipulate heavy-bodied materials while maintaining a slight amount of flexibility.

Available in 10 unique 3D-printed blade shapes, Scratchers feature a variety of tapered and blunt edges for different artistic techniques. Use them to create sgraffito effects, scrape away wet paint, apply modeling paste, or build decorative textures. Their versatile design also makes them useful for oil pastels, monoprinting, clay work, and encaustic techniques at temperatures up to 140°F.

Each Scratcher features a smooth, non-porous plastic blade, a nickel-plated brass ferrule, and a varnished wood paddle handle. The durable construction provides comfortable handling and reliable control during detailed or large-scale applications. Cleanup is simple with soap and water or SoHo Studio Wipes, while dried acrylic paint can be peeled directly from the blade.

Artist Tips
  • Build Texture with Modeling Paste: Use the Scratcher like a trowel to spread modeling paste across your surface. Once applied, drag the blade edge through the paste to create raised patterns, grooves, and expressive textures.
  • Create Sgraffito Effects: Apply layers of oil pastel, then use a Scratcher to carve through the upper layer and reveal the colors underneath. Experiment with different blade shapes to produce unique lines and patterns.
  • Keep Blades Clean: Remove wet paint with soap and water or SoHo Studio Wipes. Dried or tacky acrylic paint can be gently peeled from the smooth, non-porous blade for easy maintenance.
